Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Testing Available

What is this test?
This is a genetic test called a pharmacogenomics (PGx) test performed at any Quest location of your choice. It looks at how your body processes medications. Everyone’s genetics are a little different, and those differences can affect how well certain antidepressants work, and whether you may have more or fewer side effects from them.

What does it help with?
The test can give us helpful information to guide medication choices, such as:

  • Whether your body breaks down a medication too quickly (which might make it less effective)

  • Whether your body breaks it down more slowly (which might increase side effects)

  • Which medications may be a better “fit” for your metabolism

What it does NOT do
It does not tell us with 100% certainty which medication will work, and it does not diagnose depression or anxiety. It is not a “magic match test,” but it can reduce a lot of the trial-and-error.

How is the test done?
Usually by a cheek swab or a small blood sample. It’s quick and painless.

When is this test helpful?
This test is especially useful for people who:

  • Have tried more than one antidepressant without good results

  • Have had strong side effects from medications in the past

  • Are sensitive to medication changes

  • Want more personalized guidance for their treatment plan

Is it covered by insurance?
Some insurance plans cover the test, especially when you have tried other medications first or if there’s a medical reason to do the test. Coverage varies by plan. If insurance does not cover the test, there may be a self-pay option available.

How are the results used?
When the results come back, I will review them with you and explain what they mean in simple terms. We will use the results to guide medication selection or dosing so treatment can be more personalized to your body’s metabolism.
